Who : Daniel Sissom
Email : daniel.j.sissom@vanderbilt.edu
What : Perl (and maybe Vim)
Description :
This semester we will be learning all about how to save time and make your life easier with Perl (and a few other nifty little programs too)! Just a few things to note about what's going on this semester:
-- I will have guru office hours Wednesdays from 11:00 - 12:00. (If enough people won't be able to ever make that slot, then I can switch it to a different time.) I'll be available then to help one on one with your own Perl scripts or to answer any Perl questions you have or to attempt to answer general computing questions that have been bugging you. My office is SC 6718.
-- I will give a couple of presentations during AstroCoffee this semester. The current plan is for one to be an introduction to Perl and basic scripting, with the second going into more complex scripting tasks as well as an intro to automating tasks with cron and backing up and synchronizing data with rsync. Putting perl and cron and rsync together can be a powerful little combo.
-- If interest is high enough, I will also give a tutorial for Vim. I know a good chunk of the department already uses Emacs, so I made a little doodle poll to get feedback on who might be interested. The poll is here:

Please visit the poll and check off your level of interest at your earliest convenience.
